Is there a film which captures what this book does?

We Are Iran: The Persian Blogs (Paperback)

http://www.amazon.com/We-Are-Iran-Persian-Blogs/dp/1933368055/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202668099&sr=1-1

I learned more about modern Iran in 25 pages than from all my wasted reading for years of the New York Times.

Saw it yesterday and was blown away! Previously unfamiliar with the graphic novel, but I am a big fan of animation. Clearly I'm not alone in loving this film, but I'd be curious to also hear from anyone who didn't like it and to know why-

Guidance in exploring iranian/central asian film

Since I attended the 2003 Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, I have been interested in film from the Middle East. Around the same time I saw Baran on DVD.

There are no film festivals in my locale which focus on iranian and central asian film. I am certain this region has a rich cinematic history, which I would like to explore.

I would appreciate guidance in providing the major movements, film-makers and films of this region — the context — to enable me to better explore the cinema of this region.

Also, I imagine that the films which are recommended to me will not be available at my local video stores. Thus, I would also apprecciate advice on how to rent/buy the films recommended.

Thank you.

Two free tickets for anti-corporate Middle Eastern film suggestions

Kids,

We're in the process of putting together the program for the 2007 Anti-Corporate Film Festival (Oct. 19-21, www.countercorp.org), and are inviting cinema-savvy folks such as yourselves to recommend Middle Eastern (or Southwest Asian*) films that include some elements or themes on how corporations affect our lives.

These can include feature-length and short documentaries and narrative (fictional) film, as well as animation, experimental works, etc. — pretty much anything you can think of with the elements/themes mentioned above. The only caveat is that foreign-language films need to have English subtitles.

If we end up screening a film that you suggest, we'll give you TWO FREE TICKETS to *any* film at this year's festival. (If two people suggest the same film, the first suggestion we receive wins the tickets if we end up screening it.)

The fastest way to send us your suggestions is directly to the festival at submissions@countercorp.org. You can also post your suggestions in reply to this post, but our all-volunteer staff cannot check all of the Tribes we are members of every day (unlike e-mail).

Thanks, and look forward to hearing your suggestions!

* [In graduate school they taught us that "Southwest Asia" was the way to refer to the Middle East without doing so in relation to Europe, which is where the term "Middle East" comes from ...]

one more thing: 'German-Turks'. Thomas Arslan for example

As difficult as the term German-Turks might be (that's the social scientist speaking..) and as unapropriate this might be to approach a very talented young filmmaker, I can't help but introduce him here under that label, too, considering the fact that the few people who actually do talk about him put him in the same drawer as Fatih Akin because of their 'same' background...
Well, I like Fatih Akin, too, very much, I have to admit, but besides their common descent (Akin's parents are from the black sea as you can learn in his documentary We forgot to go back, where Aslan's parents are from exactly I can't tell and don't care) they have nothing in common, neither in style nor in temperament nor from socialisation: Akin is from Hamburg, Arslan from Berlin. Whereas Akin's movies are usually like steamtrains or a fist pointed at your stomach, fairytales from a St Pauli Street Kid full of irony and sarcasm - Arslan's movies are quiet, reduced, minimalist and always rather as if the world was seen through a blurry window, from a distance, even when you come closer to the protagonists as in any of akin's movies there will always be the feeling of never being really able to 'grasp' them. There are other directors like him in Berlin, like Angela Schanelec for example - but they all have something rather 'french' to them: usually you don't laugh out loud and although people themselves move fast, everything seems to happen in slow-mo...

Be it in Der schoene Tag/ The beautiful Day, Kardeşler/Geschwister (Siblings) or Dealer which all of them take place in Berlin Kreuzberg, a Kreuzberg that's speaking of a district shaped by long time migration on the one hand, but far from the endlessly created clichees around it.

www.german-cinema.de/app/fil...view.php

Now this year Arslan seems to have made his 'Istanbul/Turkey' documentary just as Fatih Akın had made his one (the much praised crossing the bridge, on istanbul music scene - i won't say that i don't admire this one myself, too, one of the featured singers being a close friend of my flatmate :): Aus der Ferne/From a distance. And in a way that's striking: Akın again crossing something, cultures, the bosphorus, the east and the west and having a huge laugh on it all - and arslan: still. curious. open but keeping the distance. With Istanbul as a multiple parting point to explore a Turkey Arslan himself is rather a stranger, too, although having studied two years at Ankara.

Having not had the opportunity to see this one yet at this year's berlin film festival, because İ just wasn't there, I am still looking forward to it and recommend it to you as it was recommended to me.

Movies I highly recommend for the great storytelling done in them:

1) "Baran"
2) "Color of Paradise"
3) "The Runner"
4) "The Circle"

Any comments?

Also, has anyone seen "The Other Half" (for which the director was jailed for a short time), "Under the Skin of the City," or "Smell of Camphor, Fragrance of Jasmine" I haven't been able to rent either one.

My whole being is a dark verse
which will carry you
perpetuating you
to the dawn of eternal growths and blossoming
in this verse I sighed you sighed
in this verse
I grafted you to the tree to the water to the fire.
[Fragment from Another Birth by Forugh Farrokhzad]

This sigh
is to you,
The endless
longing and belonging

Why?
I do know why

And yet,
I keep asking,
“why?”

Why me?
And why
in this flaming mode?

Messengers has no choice
When divine is in charge

Messengers,
Has no choice

Messengers

I repeat your name
And in this cyclical reading
there is a marvellous hallucination

Your echo makes me drunken

And I draw your name in this verse
And I touch your name with this hands
And taste your name with this lips

And I know
I do know you
My existence is perfumed
By the awareness
Of your presence
In my recall
Oh my essence
my fate
do enter
penetrate
me
with mysterious
passion

Let me become your shell …

Hello,

I am a writer working in Afghanistan. Besides being here, I like the films, as well. Here are some pictures http://rawfire.torche.com/~priapus/images/caleb1/

Also, some of my articles. http://nvnewswire.com

I have been writing about the US Army. Now I am heading to Herat. I want to write more on the people here. . . Teachers got a 40% raise here in Kabul. They make $20 a month now. Crazy.

HI!
I am making a brochure and poster that includes Farsi/Dari text. Does anyone know of a program/plug-in I can use so that I can type Farsi in applications like Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator?
I found some for Arabic, but Arabic doesn't have all the same letters as Farsi. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!!
Thanks!

Did any one see Googoosh: Iran's Daughter (2000) Documentary

Once Iran's most famous pop singer, Googoosh was branded a temptress and forbidden to perform or record music as a result of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iranian-American filmmaker Farhad Zamani tells her story in this documentary and examines how the revolution transformed Iranian culture. Interviews, historical analysis and performance footage are used to relate the singer's story and detail Iran's political, social and cultural changes.
Starring: Googoosh
Director: Farhad Zamani

I watched this wonderful movie last night. I enjoyed it as much as Children of Heaven.

Interestingly, two of my kids and I went to an open house put on by a new school in Seattle that only teaches script writing and direction at this point. The school was started by five prominant Hollywood figures that moved to the Seattle area (including Tom Skerritt) to escape big buget Hollywood film making. Their goal is to make Seattle a center for quality indy films. Their univeral complaint is that with a few exceptions, Hollywood isn't interested in story telling and characters. It's just interested in special effects and glitz.

So, it's coincidental that I've been watching Iranian films like these two, The Girl In The Sneakers, Baran, Kandahar, The Circle, and Ballot that tell simple but very good stories with super production - and on what has to be a tiny buget.

I went online and put holds on several DVD's in my county library system. Normally, they kind of trickle in to the branch were I pick them up. But, I just got notice that almost all of them are ready for pickup. They are:

Secret Ballot
Children of Heaven
The Circle
The Smell of Camphor
Kandahar
Baran

I'm new to all of these. Where should I start, folks?

Immigrants, refugees and transplants - we need your stories and art

Hi there, name's Cristina, I'm a Romanian immigrant living in the US. I've been here 7 years. Identity struggles? Yes. Confusion and missunderstandings? Yes. Trouble adjusting sometimes? Yes. But things can be talked out, talked through and talked over. I need your stories. Stories heal. And change lives. Go to www.sentimentalrefugee.com and send me yours.

I also need superstitions, folklore and myths from your culture. That's the ground zero of our humanity. Every culture has dragons. Every culture wards off the "bad spirits". But not in the same way. www.cafepress.com/superstitions has a few, but we need more. Send us ideas and traditions from your culture. If we use them (as in draw pictures, create products based on your thoughts) we'll give you 10% of the profits for each product that was created based on your idea. If you send us a cool graphic that we use, we'll give you 20%. Check it out.

"The Circle"

Has anyone seen "The Circle"? It was filmed in Iran by a woman director. I think an Italian company financed it...

It is incredibly powerful in it's portrayal of women without family ties, or women whose families have disowned them, living in Iran. The plot moves from woman to woman, but instead of this being a distractor from the central theme, the movement helps Westerners understand the incredible frailty of Iranian women's lives. It is masterful storytelling.
