Since I attended the 2003 Arab Film Festival in San Francisco, I have been interested in film from the Middle East. Around the same time I saw Baran on DVD.
There are no film festivals in my locale which focus on iranian and central asian film. I am certain this region has a rich cinematic history, which I would like to explore.
I would appreciate guidance in providing the major movements, film-makers and films of this region — the context — to enable me to better explore the cinema of this region.
Also, I imagine that the films which are recommended to me will not be available at my local video stores. Thus, I would also apprecciate advice on how to rent/buy the films recommended.
Thank you.

Re: Guidance in exploring iranian/central asian film
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 1:03 AMHow about starting here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinema_of_Iran
And did you try netflix? I'm getting my fix there although I did not yet explore their selection (or lack) of Iranian films there.

Thu, March 22, 2007 - 1:18 AMThanks! Who would ever imagine a simple trip to Wikipedia would yield such a gold mine. The other day I saw the Brazilian film City of God, and after some discussions came to learn this film is typical of current Brazilian cinema. Now I have received another great gift. The link you gave me revealed more than I ever dreamed. -

Mon, May 14, 2007 - 1:53 PMYou might enjoy Shirin Neshat's work as well. Her work falls somewhere between art and film. I don't think you could find this via netflix, but perhaps online? -
